Area roundup: Seneca boys win sectional, girls reach state finals

SENECA – The Seneca boys track and field team scored 112 points Thursday to outdistance IC Catholic, which totaled 92, and win the Class 1A Sectional.

Winning individual sectional titles for the Irish were Tyler Draine in pole vault (11 feet, 5 inches), Logan Vanderberg in discus (139-10), Cole Westmoreland in the 800 (2 minutes, 54 seconds), Isaiah Swom in the wheelchair division of the shot put and the 100, and the 4x800 (8 minutes, 28.78 seconds) and 4x400 (3:37.38) relays.

Taking second place and also qualifying for next weekend’s state meet at Eastern Illinois University were Mason Dooley in pole vault (10-11), Austin Cockream in shot put (38-10) and Christopher Collet in the 1,600 (4:42.21).

2A Marian Catholic Sectional: Peotone’s lone qualifier was Will Gaskin, who took second in the 800 (2:03.69).


1A state preliminaries: Seneca qualified senior Cora Wilkinson in the long jump (16-11) and sophomore Grace Alley in the triple jump (35.04) for the finals at the Class 1A State Meet. Wilkinson and Alley were joined by seniors Emily Woods and Eva Bruno in qualifying for the finals in the 4x400 relay. Dwight senior Daly Galoway qualified in the 1,600 (5:12.37).


Lemont 19-10, Hillcrest 1-0: Jade Mardjetko threw a one-hitter in the opener, with 13 strikeouts and one walk. Lucy Conway went 2 for 4 with four RBIs. In the second game, Gia Canterino pitched a perfect game, allowing no hits and no walks. At the plate, Canterino went 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Haley Ercoli went 2 for 3 and scored twice.

Plainfield Central 11, Romeoville 2: Brooklyn Daly drove in three runs, while Sammi Newtoff and Marie Franzen each had two RBIs, and Daly and Franzen combined on a three-hitter in the Southwest Prairie victory.

Lincoln-Way Central 8, Bradley 5: The Knights (21-6, 11-1) earned the SouthWest Suburban Red Conference championship with the win.

Oak Park 7, Providence 2: Lex Leighton and Shannon Smith scored runs for the Celtics (19-11).

Oswego 7, Plainfield South 4: Kayla Rebholz and Katelyn Kilgore each had two hits for South in the Southwest Prairie loss.


Plainfield North 10, Illiana Christian 0: Gavin Doyle (3-0) struck out three and allowed two hits and one walk in four innings for the Tigers (25-8). Connor Peplow went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, Anthony Fumagalli went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Brady Miller was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Cameron Kissel also was 2 for 4.

Romeoville 12 Joliet Central 10: Chris Sheputis picked up the Southwest Prairie Conference victory. Fernando Perez led Romeoville’s offense with four hits. Jeff Zack chipped in three hits and Tyler Horvath homered.

Plainfield East 7, Oswego East 5: Logan Schmitt struck out five to earn the win, while Dalton Crowder, Jacob Havis and JJ Zywiciel each had a homer for the Bengals (20-15, 8-10) .

Lemont 4, Merrillville Andrean, Ind. 0: Nate Madej threw a four-hitter and struck out 14, while Angel Salinas added two hits and two RBIs.

Lincoln-Way Central 7, Bradley 0: The Knights improved to 20-7 overall and 12-2 in the SouthWest Suburban Red.

2A Herscher Regional: Reed-Custer topped Wilmington, 9-6. The Comets will face host Herscher in the championship game Saturday.

2A Chicago Christian Regional: Peotone will face Chicago Christian in Saturday’s title game after topping Beecher, 13-3.


Lincoln-Way East def. Lincoln-Way Central, 25-22, 25-16: Willy Kickert (three blocks) and Matt von Holst (two blocks) had four kills each for Central (26-9, 5-3).


Lemont graduate competes in D-III Championships: Christos Giatras (Lemont) brought home a seventh-place finish at 184 pounds last weekend at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
