Letter: This is not Berlin

To the Editor:

“Ich bin ein Berliner” said President Kennedy. This is not Berlin. This is America.

Are we to embrace a Soviet method of restriction and build a wall on the U.S. southern border in order to keep people out of the land of opportunity?

I can hear an echo of President Reagan saying “Tear down this wall!”

Now, are we going to build our own?

The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, in the Bill of Rights, guarantees us freedom of speech.

In order to speak, we use language.

To immigrate to America, having a requirement of speaking the English language is clearly a violation of the First Amendment right to freedom of speech.

In reality, English is a foreign language, the tongue of Great Britain.
