Girls basketball: Geneva rallies past Montini for Class 4A title

NORMAL – The Geneva defense pitched a fourth-quarter shutout, outscoring Montini, 6-0, over the final eight minutes Saturday night to pull out a thrilling 28-26 victory in the Class 4A Girls Basketball State Tournament championship game.

Montini (34-3) had led, 21-15, at half and 26-22 after three quarters. The Broncos shot 37 percent to Geneva’s 28.2 percent and outrebounded the Vikings, 30-20, but committed 19 turnovers. Maddy Yelle scored 10 points for Geneva (31-3). Patty Aaliyah scored 12 and grabbed 12 rebounds for Montini.

Maine West 45, Edwardsville 41 (third): Rachel Kent scored 18 points and Angela Dugalic 13 for Maine West (32-2), which trailed 35-34 after three quarters. Kate Martin scored 13 for Edwardsville (30-2).

Semifinal scores: Montini 37, Edwardsville 30; Geneva 58, Maine West 41.

CLASS 3A

Peoria Richwoods 55, Nazareth 46 (title): Richwoods outscored Nazareth, 18-5, in the fourth quarter after trailing, 41-37, after three to claim the championship. Kourtney Crane scored 18 points and Jaida McCloud chipped in 11 points and 17 rebounds, helping the Knights (35-1) to a 40-26 rebounding advantage. Camryn Taylor and Tianna Johnson also scored 11 for Richwoods. Alyssa Geary had 18 points and Annie Stritzel 17 for Nazareth (31-3).

Glenbard South 35, Breese Central 29 (third): Maggie Bair totaled 15 points for Glenbard South (30-4), which trailed, 14-13, at halftime. Faye Meissner led all scorers with 18 points for Breese (29-5), but her teammates combined to make only three baskets in 24 shots.

Semifinal scores: Richwoods 38, Glenbard South 34; Nazareth 58, Breese Central 25.
