JOLIET – A Naperville man was arrested after he allegedly choked a 56-year-old man and smacked him in the head with a handgun several times, police said.

On Friday afternoon, the 56-year-old man alleged that Deshawn B. Smith, 25, of the 1600 block of Country Lakes Drive in Naperville had threatened him, his girlfriend and his mother while demanding money for missing drugs, Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said in an email. The two are acquaintances, Gregory said.

The man alleged to police that Smith choked him three times to the point where he almost passed out each time, Gregory said. Then Smith allegedly hit him in the head with a handgun several times.

Joliet police officers who responded to the incident reportedly saw injuries on the man that were consistent with his account of the battery. They then searched for Smith, who had left a vehicle in the 900 block of West Park Avenue and arrested him, Gregory said.

Smith was charged with aggravated battery and booked into the Will County jail.
