An Aurora woman used false information to try to buy a MacBook and two cellphones at Best Buy in Joliet, police said.

About 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Lisa A. Davis, 29, of the 400 block of Watson Street was arrested at Best Buy on charges of identity theft, forgery and possession of fraudulent identification.

Davis tried to open a $2,000 line of credit at Best Buy, 3351 Mall Loop Drive, to buy a MacBook and two cellphones, Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said in an email.

The sales associate discovered that the identification card Davis was using was fraudulent after scanning it, Gregory said. Officers arrived and met with the sales associate, who presented the card to them.

The officer ran a state identification check on the card and picture, which reportedly did not match state records. Gregory said there were other indicators discovered by the officer that verified the card was fraudulent.

Davis tried to open the line of credit on the name shown on the face of the fraudulent card. Officers also discovered a Chase Visa card in the same name as the one on the card.

Gregory said the victim, whose name is legally on the card, is a 40-year-old woman from Plainfield.

Davis was arrested and taken to the Will County jail. She is being held on a $25,000 bond, of which she’ll need 10 percent to post bail. She was scheduled for a bond hearing at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
