Event to benefit wounded veterans

The Run for the Brave 5K will be held May 26 in Plainfield to benefit wounded veterans.

The event, formerly known as the "Wounded Warrior 5K," will benefit Operation Welcome You Home, a nonprofit dedicated to helping wounded veterans in the state of Illinois, according to a news release from the Plainfield Police Department.

The event will take place at 7 a.m., with the 5K starting about 8 a.m., at Plainfield North High School.

Funds raised assist veterans with airfare for help with burial expenses, temporary financial assistance, food and more.

The following roads will be closed and parking prohibited beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday until the majority of runners clear the area: 248th Avenue from Winterberry Lane to Champion Drive, 119th Street from Millennium Parkway to Heritage Meadows Drive, Champion Drive from Millennium Parkway to Champion Court, Heritage Meadows Drive from Freedom Elementary School to 119th Street and Van Dyke Road from 119th Street to Whispering Trails Drive.

Anyone with questions on road closures or parking can contact Cmdr. Ken Ruggles at 815-267-7211.
