As of noon Monday, emergency crews continued searching for a man who jumped off a boat into the Des Plaines River and never surfaced, Channahon fire officials said.
The Channahon Fire Protection District was sent to the area at 6:52 p.m. Sunday, and a search was initiated where the waterway merges with the Kankakee River. The male swimmer was reported missing about 6:58 p.m.
Because of the amount of time in the water and its temperature, the search effort was turned into a recovery effort as of 8:50 p.m. Sunday. Emergency personnel, boats and divers went into the water and have been conducting a search using multiple resources, including a helicopter and search dog.
Sonar-directed searches were being conducted as of 7 a.m. Monday. Operations were scheduled to continue throughout the day with aerial and visual searches along the shorelines.
The missing swimmer is described as a man who is about 40-years-old.
