An 11-year-old girl was chased by a black-clad man who shouted to her, “Come here, I got something for you,” police said.
The girl was walking to the West Jensen Street home of a friend two blocks from her own house about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Will County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.
As the girl approached Canterbury Street near Shorewood, a man dressed in black shorts and a black T-shirt with brown or black ear-length hair ran at her, Hoffmeyer said.
“He was yelling, ‘Come here, I got something for you,’ ” Hoffmeyer said.
The girl ran for her friend’s house, trying to call her mother on her cellphone as she fled, Hoffmeyer said.
Once the girl was out of reach, her pursuer turned north on Lake Woods Lane and disappeared from view, Hoffmeyer said.
Once the girl was safely inside her friend’s house, the friend’s mother called the girl’s mother, Hoffmeyer said, and the girl’s mother called the police.
Sheriff’s deputies searched the area for the man but did not find him. Deputies also explored the possibility that the incident was captured on a resident’s home surveillance system but have yet to obtain useful video.
Investigators plan to speak with the girl again in hopes of discovering more information, Hoffmeyer said. Investigators also hope a sketch artist can produce a likeness of the man who accosted the child.
The sheriff’s office advised residents to be vigilant and asked anyone with information to call 815-727-8575.
