A convicted Joliet sexual predator slapped his girlfriend three times and pulled out a knife when another man tried to intervene, police said.
On Tuesday, a person had flagged down officers in the 100 block of North Ottawa Street after seeing a man slap a woman nearby, Joliet police Sgt. Darrell Gavin said in an email. Officers investigated the incident and found a woman crying.
When the officers asked her what happened, she alleged that she was in a verbal argument with her boyfriend, Kenneth D. Ekonomi, 51, of the 600 block of East Cass Street. The argument turned physical when Ekonomi allegedly began slapping her.
The victim said that a male friend of hers witnessed Ekonomi slapping her and tried to intervene. Ekonomi allegedly pulled a knife on him. The friend said he saw Ekonomi slap his girlfriend and he tried to get in between them to stop the abuse, Gavin said.
The witness said Ekonomi pulled out a knife and pointed it at him.
At 3:15 p.m., officers arrested Ekonomi at 150 N. Ottawa St. and charged him with domestic battery and aggravated assault.
Ekonomi is listed on the Illinois sex offender registry as a sexual predator for an aggravated criminal sexual abuse conviction. The victim was 6 and Ekonomi was 40 at the time of the offense.
On June 27, 2013, Ekonomi pleaded guilty to failing to register as a sex offender. He was sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of $515.
