Police: Joliet teen steals PlayStation, cellphones, car in armed robbery

A 16-year-old used a gun to threaten the sellers of a PlayStation 4 before stealing the gaming system and their cellphones and driving away in their car, police said.

About 11 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a report of a robbery that occurred in the 400 block of Richards Street, Joliet police Sgt. Darrell Gavin said in an email.

When the officers arrived, they met with two people who said they came to Joliet to sell a PlayStation 4 after meeting a buyer through the letgo smartphone app, Gavin said.

They said they were supposed to meet with the buyer, who was a 16-year-old, in the 400 block of Fourth Avenue.

The sellers were in their car when they met with the teen.

Once one of the sellers showed him a PlayStation 4, the teen pulled out a handgun, opened the passenger door to the car and pressed the handgun into the stomach of one of the sellers, Gavin said.

The teen then demanded both of them abandon their car and told them to leave the PlayStation 4 along with their cellphones, Gavin said. The teen then entered the driver’s side of the vehicle and drove off in the car, Gavin said.

Gavin said both victims were unhurt and refused medical attention.

After detectives were notified of the incident, they conducted an investigation that led to the identification and arrest of the 16-year-old.

Police arrested the teen Thursday in the 300 block Hickory Avenue in Romeoville.

The teen was charged with armed robbery and aggravated vehicular hijacking.

The 16-year-old was taken to River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.
