The girlfriend of a Joliet man who was jailed after he was accused of striking a woman in the eye has claimed that her boyfriend did not attack her and he was only trying to protect his baby.
On Sept. 7, Ellis N. Echevarria, 20, of the 1200 block of John Street was arrested on probable cause of committing domestic battery for allegedly striking a woman in the eye after arguing with her, police said.
The case was not filed in Will County court and Echevarria was released from jail Sept. 8.
Echevarria’s girlfriend, Ashley Zahrte, claimed that he was wrongly arrested and locked up because he was trying to protect their 4-month-old daughter from his 19-year-old sister.
Joliet police Sgt. Darrell Gavin deferred to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office after being asked several questions about the case. Will County State’s Attorney spokesman Charles B. Pelkie did not return a call for comment Friday.
Zahrte said Echevarria’s sister had came over to his house and “started problems” with her boyfriend, including threatening to attack him and his daughter. Echevarria ignored her, but his sister took a diaper bag and whacked his baby in the head with it, Zahrte said.
Zahrte said Echevarria did not retaliate at first but he eventually pushed his sister away when she tried to attack him and his daughter again.
