A 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly kidnapping three children, police said.

On Wednesday, Deray J. Melton, 27, of the 300 block of North Broadway in Joliet was arrested and taken to the Will County jail on a series of kidnapping charges.

He’s being held at the jail on a $750,000 bond.

Melton faces charges of aggravated kidnapping, kidnapping by deceit or enticement, unlawful restraint and criminal trespass to a residence.

Officers responded to the
300 block of North Broadway
after receiving a report of three children going missing, Joliet Deputy Police Chief Darrell Gavin said in an email.

The mother of the children left them at her apartment when she went to pick up her other child from the school bus, Gavin said.

When she returned, she noticed they were gone, he said.

She checked with the neighbors and then contacted the police.

Officers who were responding to the incident spotted a man walking with three children in the area of Division and Summit streets, Gavin said.

Officers stopped the man, later identified as Melton, and he gave inconsistent answers regarding the children and where he was going, he said. Melton then was arrested.

Officers brought the mother to the location where Melton was found, and she identified the children as her own, Gavin said. She said she did not know Melton, he said.

An investigation determined Melton took the children against their will and without consent, Gavin said.
