Plainfield awarded grant for moveable safety sign

The Village of Plainfield was awarded a grant to help purchase a transportable message board for public safety.
The Village of Plainfield was awarded a grant to help purchase a transportable message board for public safety.

The village of Plainfield was one of 25 northern Illinois municipalities recently awarded a public safety grant through a ComEd program.

The ComEd Powering Safe Communities Program awarded grants of up to $10,000 for each of the 25 public agencies, according to a news release.

The grants will go toward addressing critical safety needs in each community involving anything from speed notification technology to cameras.

Plainfield’s grant will go toward the purchase of a variable message board that is easily transportable and will be used to give immediate updates and directives to improve safety within the community. Use of the message board will be shared among the Department of Public Works, Fire Protection District and Park District.

Another grant will go to University Park for a stand-by generator for the village’s Fire Station 1.

“The safety of the public and our employees is our highest priority,” said Melissa Washington, ComEd’s vice president of governmental and external affairs. “By providing local agencies with the resources required to help address public safety needs, we’re powering a brighter, more resilient future for the residents they serve.”

For the past four grant cycles, ComEd has collaborated with the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, a council for Chicago-area chief elected officials, on public policy issues and to fund $670,000 of public safety projects throughout northern Illinois. Through this collaboration, ComEd provides the program funding, the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus administers the grants and grant recipients match ComEd’s contributions with their own funding of equal or greater value.
