Why Politza was selected:
The sophomore runner missed much of her season due to injury but still was able to place fifth at the IHSA Class 2A cross country finals to become her school's first two-time state medalist, its best-ever finisher and set a new school mark of 17:22.8.
Politza talked with Herald-News sportswriter Curt Herron. Below is an edited transcript.
Herron: What did you like about your performance?
Politza: It was very exciting. When I first got my stress fracture, I was kind of expecting to be out for the entire season, so to be able to run at the state meet was really incredible. It went pretty well.
Herron: What did you like most about your team?
Politza: Even though I was sidelined, I really enjoyed going with the team to the meets. It was great cheering them on and helping to encourage them from the sidelines. Destiny Vargas, my best friend, PR'd again at state and that was really enjoyable to watch.
Herron: What do like most about competing for Lemont?
Politza: Representing Lemont is such an honor since the program has had so many great athletes so to be up there with them is just incredible.
Herron: What do you like most about running?
Politza: After a long day, it's nice to go out because it's just me and my thoughts. It relieves all of the stress from the school day and airs out my soul.
Herron: Who's your biggest influences?
Politza: My parents, Stacy and Bob, They both ran for Lewis University and were both All-American athletes and I want to follow in their footsteps. They're just so amazing.
Herron: What are your favorite TV shows?
Politza: I love The Rookie and Chicago P.D.
Herron: Who's someone that you would like to meet?
Politza: Shelby Houlihan.
Herron: What's your favorite restaurant?
Politza: Kitaro Grill & Sushi Lounge
Herron: What do you like to do in your free time?
Politza: I love to cook and get crafts for kids I baby sit.
Herron: What do want to do in your future?
Politza: I am striving to be a professional runner.
Herron: Do you have any pets?
Politza: I have a cat named Daisy.
Herron: Where's the best place that you've visited and where would you like to visit?
Politza: Riviera Maya, Mexico. Paris.
