A Joliet man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of false impersonation of a police officer after an altercation inside a bank at the Walmart on West Jefferson Street.

Police said that Demarkus D. Bailey, 42, of the 400 block of Western Avenue, claimed that he was a police officer and that he had a loaded gun during a verbal altercation with customers of the Woodforest National Bank inside the Walmart at 2424 W. Jefferson St.

Joliet police received a report of Bailey causing a disturbance inside the Walmart shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday, Joliet police Sgt. Christopher Botzum said.

After the officers arrived, they were told that Bailey got into a verbal altercation with customers of the bank and then claimed he was a police officer with a loaded gun, Botzum said. He said he didn’t know why Bailey was causing the disturbance or why he claimed to be an officer.

Bailey was not carrying a firearm and nobody was hurt during the incident, Botzum said.

The officers arrested Bailey. About 11:40 a.m., he was taken to the Will County jail, and he remained in custody Thursday afternoon.

Bailey was charged with false impersonation of a police officer, a Class 4 felony punishable by up to three years in prison.

Bailey also was charged with misdemeanor criminal defacement of property.
