Underwood backs push to reach 100% clean economy by 2050

U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood announced her support this week for legislation which would set a nationwide goal of reaching a 100% clean energy economy by 2050.

The 100% Clean Economy Act of 2019 defines the goal as net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across all sectors of the economy, according to a news release.

"Saving our planet from the threat of climate change is a public health and economic imperative," Underwood said. "Committing the United States to a 100% clean energy economy by 2050 is a bold solution that will protect public health and help create high-quality green jobs in northern Illinois and across the country."

The bill gives directives to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to put the nation on the path to meeting the 100% clean energy goal. The EPA would have to evaluate its plans, make recommendations to strengthen them as needed and report each year on its progress.

The legislation also lays out principles for dealing with issues like public health, especially in rural and vulnerable populations, driving quality job creation, and preparing communities for the impacts and risks associated with climate change.

Underwood is an original cosponsor of the legislation, which over 150 members of Congress support.
