King, who'd already produced Spider-Man trading cards for Upper Deck, inquired at a convention the process for creating Star Wars cars for Topps.
Talk about "ask and you shall receive."
"I was given the contract information for the art director at Topps," King said. "I sent samples of
Star Wars illustrations and painting I've done. I heard back in two weeks, biting my nails the whole time."
A member of the Christian rock band Daniel's Window, King decided several years ago to transition from fan artist to professional artist. King began creating, showing and selling more art along with building a name for himself, "a slow, arduous process," he said.
At the five-year mark, King took a bigger leap. He sent samples of his work to Upper Deck and created special sketch cards for the 2017 Fleer Ultra Spider-Man Trading Cards. Special set cards differ from the printed cards in the set, King said.
"They sent me actual cards, asked me to draw paintings on them and then ship them back," King said. "They're randomly inserted into packs of trading cards."
King earned a Bachelor of Fine Art in illustration from the American Academy of Art in Chicago, according to his website at www.thecalebking.com. In addition, King has created three comic book series – "Surreality," "Verse/Chorus" and "Cradle" – and significantly to the independent comic "Spark," King's website also said.
