In regard to whether or not football factored into the decision at all, Swick admitted while football is a big deal to the school, it was not a “driving factor” in the decision. He explained that Wilmington has had a lot of success in the current conference.
While they want to get to an even number of schools in the conference, exactly which schools might join or make a new conference is unknown at this point, but the current makeup of the conference will remain through next school year, 2018-19. The first year Wilmington will not be a part of the Interstate Eight Conference would be the 2019-20 academic year.
“It's a difficult decision,” Swick said. “We've been members of the conference for a long time. It's been a great conference. It's served out kids well. We've got a lot of great relationships with many other school districts...so definitely not a decision that was taken lightly, but one that we feel is in the best interest of our kids at this time.”
