JOLIET – Blaine Ray, an internationally known founder of Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling, not only agreed to mentor Joliet West Spanish teacher Tammy Hunsaker in pursuing TPRS certification, but also visited her classroom Oct. 31.
During Ray’s visit, he taught an engaging lesson using TPRS during one period, and then co-taught with Hunsaker the following class.
Ray developed TPRS while teaching high school for over 20 years in Ontario, Oregon and Bakersfield, California. In TPRS, students acquire language by hearing, reading, writing, telling and retelling stories in class with the guidance of the teacher in a personalized, dynamic and comprehensible way.
The teacher leads with a story outline and asks the class numerous questions to ensure that the class understands the language.
Along the way, they add personalized, interesting, and comprehensible details to the story.
During Ray’s visit, the students were all very attentive and participated in the dynamic and entertaining storytelling.
