“The first year he ran it in record time,” Holly said. “I can’t say the specific time; I don’t remember. I know he ran the whole race. He was very physically fit.”
The next year, Derek “walked it kind of slow, but he walked it.” The third year, Derek pushed a stroller, leaning his body against it for stability, Holly said.
“He struggled so much with it, but he was determined to finish the 3 miles,” Holly said.
The next year he used a recumbent bicycle. For the 2017 race, even that was impossible because of the lack of muscle control in his arms, legs and neck. He was pushed in a wheelchair, Holly said.
