Jared Voss had coached the Joliet Catholic Academy baseball team through 499 victories during his 20 years at the helm.
But he was absent as his team reached the milestone 500th Friday at Gillespie Field on the JCA campus. What gives?
“I have a father-daughter dance that starts at 6 o’clock Friday,” Voss explained his priorities Thursday before the Hilltoppers’ 8-5 victory over Lincoln-Way Central, which was No. 499. “I won’t be there [for the Friday home game against Plainfield North].”
The Hilltoppers, as they have been doing of late, came from behind to beat the Tigers, 3-1. Voss had his 500th as well as a memorable night with his 6-year-old, Lyla.
“Twenty years is a long time, but it goes by fast,” he said. “I was 24 when [JCA athletic director Dan Sharp] gave me the opportunity to be the head coach. I am forever grateful to him.”
