In the years following, some more men made it onto the emptied out death row. One of them was Brian Nelson, who beat his 19-year-old girlfriend to death with a crowbar and then, in an attempt to cover his tracks, proceeded to bludgeon her younger brother, her father and her father's girlfriend, killing them all.
Nelson was 19 at the time of the May 2002 killings. So was his girlfriend, Sara Tennant.
When he was questioned by detectives, Nelson told how he “still wanted to save his relationship with Sara, so he drove to her house, leaving his residence around 2 or 2:30 a.m.,” according to an Illinois Supreme Court opinion.
