Former Bolingbrook woman reflects as mumps break out in Will County
I grew up in Bolingbrook and went to school in the Valley View School District and later the Indian Prairie School District. During college visits my junior and senior years of high school, the University of Missouri in Columbia was the first school I visited and no other school could compare. After graduation, I packed up and headed six hours southwest to attend Mizzou to study journalism and information technology.
I love Mizzou. I met so many incredible people and made many memories.
One of those, unfortunately, was the 2016 mumps outbreak.
The MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps and rubella. I had received all my required vaccines, so when the outbreak hit, I wasn’t too worried. Initially it almost seemed humorous – what were the odds anyone you knew would get mumps?
Two hundred-plus cases later, it wasn’t as funny.
