Print views and rebuttals together

To the Editor:

In response to the Sept. 22 Another View: It’s not playing fair to publish a full column opinion on Sunday and allow us to reply on a day like Wednesday. If the opinion is in a Sunday paper, the rebuttal should also be in a Sunday paper.  

This time the Another View opinion piece went after pensions. It’s the pension’s fault that the state is broke, and there are problems going forward.  

Nope, it’s the very politicians from downstate that refuse to raise taxes or fund legislation. The opinion calls for the same people that have been underfunding pensions, borrowing against pension funds and blaming everyone but themselves, to suddenly correct a problem they created.  

Their schools have funding because the state pays for it. And the last time anyone looked, the majority of that money has come from Cook and the collar counties. For every conceived wrong that the author wants corrected, you will harm thousands of retirees, who have simply worked in their careers, contributed to the pension fund and retired honestly.  

If these people are affected by changes, they have no safety net. Most are seniors now. Social Security does not cover or apply to them. They have only their pension. These people can very likely lose their homes, suddenly not afford insurance or medication and become poverty stricken if the state does not keep its contracted word with people, who provided a service over many years to you and your children.  

I suppose the author thinks it’s OK to walk into his bank a few years after a home purchase and say, “You know what, that mortgage I signed for with my lawyer? I don’t want to pay that anymore.  And yes, all goods and services are mine to keep for free, too.”

A culinary delight

To the Editor:

On Sept. 6, which was our 50th wedding anniversary, my husband, son and I dined at Thrive in downtown Joliet. 

Thrive is part of the Culinary Arts Program of Joliet Junior College. From 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, they serve an upscale menu for their patrons. The students get a chance to work in a kitchen preparing delectable dishes for their patrons and also have an opportunity to learn what it is like in a restaurant atmosphere waiting on customers.

All the food we had was delicious and the portions were just right. The environment was very pleasant. The only large-screen TVs were displaying the “chefs” preparing their culinary masterpieces.

Chef Tim Bucci did a wonderful job guiding his 12+ future chefs in meal preparation and presentation. Also, Eric Bell guided the servers in a restaurant setting to be accommodating and courteous. In addition, I wish to congratulate our server, Brandon, on his forthcoming new job at Disney World as a pastry chef.
