Paula Barnett was just trying to save one of God’s creatures from dying alone out in the freezing cold.
It was a creature whose mother had been run down by a car and killed in the street, and Barnett wrapped it in a blanket and brought it home, where she fed it cat food and milk, and gave it to her granddaughter to hold.
Then, on Tuesday, Barnett took the warmed and fed orphan over to Joliet Township Animal Control office with the idea that the agency might transport it to a wildlife center, where it could live until it was old enough to make it in the world on its own.
Only instead of taking it to a wildlife center, animal control killed it. They did this because the creature was a skunk, and that is what animal control does with skunks.
