MVA Female Athlete of the Week: Kaylie Politza, Lemont

Cross Country, Sophomore

Kaylie Politza, Lemont
Kaylie Politza, Lemont

Why Politza was selected:

The sophomore runner missed much of her season due to injury but still was able to place fifth at the IHSA Class 2A cross country finals to become her school's first two-time state medalist, its best-ever finisher and set a new school mark of 17:22.8.

Politza talked with Herald-News sportswriter Curt Herron. Below is an edited transcript.

Herron: What did you like about your performance?

Politza: It was very exciting. When I first got my stress fracture, I was kind of expecting to be out for the entire season, so to be able to run at the state meet was really incredible. It went pretty well.

Herron: What did you like most about your team?

Politza: Even though I was sidelined, I really enjoyed going with the team to the meets. It was great cheering them on and helping to encourage them from the sidelines. Destiny Vargas, my best friend, PR'd again at state and that was really enjoyable to watch.

Politza: Representing Lemont is such an honor since the program has had so many great athletes so to be up there with them is just incredible.
