SUV or minivan — which to choose?

With families constantly on the move with sports, school, lessons and childcare, minivans and SUVs have come front and center as the transportation of choice, replacing the venerable station wagon of years gone by.

Which is best? Each has its own set of amenities to consider.

Minivans are generally a little lower in price, but both tie for safety. SUVs provide great visibility and all-wheel drive, which is an advantage if you live in a snowbelt. But minivans have an auto base that helps them hug the road better, says U.S. News & World Report. But both SUVs and minivans are becoming more equipped with advanced safety and driver assistance features like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist. These are even standard in some models.

Minivans generally provide a more comfortable ride in all three rows, but if you rarely use that third row SUVs are just fine. Minivans are also lower to the ground, so easier to step into, and their sliding back seat doors are easier to open in tight spaces, and easier to open, in general, so kids can get in and out themselves — a real plus, notes

With a minivan, you can have all three rows of seats up and still have room in the back for a stroller, adds Plus, loading heavy items is easier because it sits lower.

SUVs have a little more of that “cool” factor that some feel minivans don’t have, as they sit higher, which some people prefer when driving. Some SUVs check off all boxes says Damian Gabrus, General Manager at Hawk Volkswagen in Joliet.  For instance,  the 2019 Atlas is a  SUV that gives you the best of both worlds with the “cool” factor but the space and comfort of a mini-van.  according to Gabrus.

As far as technology goes, both SUVs and minivans carry a varying amount, depending on which level model you choose. Some come with available voice amplification systems, rear-seat cameras, automatic climate control systems, smart-phone integration, built-in navigation, entertainment, and vacuum systems, says U.S. News.
